Welding Certifications Egyptian Welders Need for Gulf Oil & Gas Projects

A welder's CV means little to a Gulf oil & gas contractor without a certificate proving the weld holds under pressure, heat, and inspection. This article explains the core certifications employers ask for, and how QTS verifies them before shortlisting.

6G Position Certification

The 6G test is a fixed pipe welded at a 45-degree angle across all positions simultaneously, widely considered the hardest pipe-welding qualification. A valid 6G certificate proves competence across every other pipe position (1G, 2G, 5G), and is often the minimum Gulf pipeline and process piping projects require.

API 1104

The American Petroleum Institute's standard for welding pipelines and related facilities, specific to oil and gas transmission and distribution piping, and frequently named directly in Gulf tender documents.

ASME Section IX

Governs welding procedures and welder qualification for pressure vessels, boilers, and process equipment — covering both the welding procedure specification (WPS) and the welder's performance qualification (WPQ). Refineries and petrochemical plants lean heavily on ASME-qualified welders for tank and vessel work.

TIG (GTAW) and SMAW Process Qualification

TIG is typically required for root passes on high-integrity piping, especially stainless steel and alloy lines. SMAW remains the standard for structural steel and fill/cap passes in field conditions. Most oil & gas projects require both, since a single scope of work often moves between processes.

Why the Paper Trail Matters

A certificate is only useful if it's current, traceable, and matches the client's actual welding procedure. A WPQ tested on one thickness or material grade doesn't automatically cover another — mismatches here are a common cause of candidates being rejected during technical vetting.

How QTS Verifies Welder Certifications Before Shortlisting

Every welder QTS puts forward is checked against position, code, and process qualifications before shortlisting, matched to the project's actual scope — part of why QTS delivers shortlists within 72 hours.
